Re: Migration from Netlist based design to Central library based

I understand there goal,

make the central library match the pads flow,

but lets face it , the PADS layout needs only DXdesigner attributes translated to PADS layout attributes. and dx designer needs nothing all all from PADS layout.

Forcing Pads schematic nomenclature and rules onto  dxdesigner simply makes a ton of legacy Dxdesigner stuff that worked fine now completely unusable.

If the packager ignored schematic related stuff like the netlist flow currently does , I would have no problem.

My Large scale problem is ,  I have a dxdatabook with 1200+ parts , schematic symbols with 2500+ parts, and a PCB decal library with 2000 + parts. I admit  not all of this is correct and properly linked , BUT in a netlist flow, it all works on pretty complex designs, and is easily corrected when a problem is identified , AND none of it contains any Pads schematic related things.

We never used Pads schematic entry and as a NOTE: in the latest VX , they do not even include it in the install. so why force me to reference an incompatible AND ALSO NOW  obsolete format for migrating data to a central library. remember , the central library data still has the same symbol data base and Pads pcb data it had before. my issue is forcing the use of the packager which is obviously from Pads Schematic to Pads PCB and not making it work with the dxdesigner architecture, which is going to be the new long term entry standard anyway.

They also tossed in another wildcard as well , they are integrating Expedition into this mix. It appears to me that expedition is the final goal in the long run. so now 3 things to mix up and muddle the process.

Re: How to copy a xDx Designer - xPCB project

I have just finished working through the "Getting Started" tutorial in 7.9.5

Here's the Scenario:

Now I want to "experiment" with that layout, so I used the File/Save a Copy command in Expedition, and called it "Experimental"

(that command loads a small dialog box from the Job Management Wizard)

Then I loaded my copy and right-clicked in the navigator pane to change "systemdesign" (the tutorial project) to "Experimental"

(I renamed BOTH the board and the schematic, since "systemdesign" was used as a board name and schematic name)

I ran Verify, and Update and Package, no errors

Here's the Symptoms:

When I load the board in Expedition, first it says "Unable to locate root block systemdesign in schematic, Forward Annotation will be required"

(which seems reasonable)

but then when I select "Forward Annotate" it says

"Cannot access the module that manages the PCB and schematic data interchange"

and then

"The root of the design has been changed, This change can seriously affect the PCB design"

Here's the Questions:

What is the "serious affect" mentioned in the warning?

Should I have done something differently?

Why didn't "Verify", "Update Symbols/Objects" or "Package" notice anything wrong?

Finally, I went ahead and performed Forward Annotation to see what would happen,

and it asked me to check a few reports "PCBlogfile.txt" and "ForwardAnnotation.txt"

Can you view log files from inside DXD/EE or do you have to find them in the file directory somewhere?

thanks,

Jack (aka "the new guy")

Hi Pete,

Just for reference,

Some additional info for you.

I exported the two part libraries to text version “.p” files so I can compare what did and did not get migrated.

The “Canfield_libs_MO0” is the original netlist flow part file, {naming is internal…. MO0 is “solder mask oversize 0” }

“PCB_Symbols” is from the translated integrated library version,

I used winmerge to compare, it highlights differences nicely.

In PCB_Symbols.p:

The parts that have no “gate’” section could not migrate , and will not work,

The parts that have gate sections but pin names are the same in both likely will not work as they were unaltered and have no CAE decal.

The parts that have been altered with valid names and CAE decal names  mostly are good , maybe with some exceptions { not sure}.

By comparison, not a whole lot was migrated to a functional states.

It should  be noted that libraries in pads were created for every partition in dxdesigner and some of the parts that were correct are in those partitions now.

But it’s not a lot of improved data , and I Did not want to confuse with too many files.

I guess the issues sum down to the packager want to verify “part” integrity, but the central library manager stores all Parts in the “PADS” part file  ,

which is not compatible with dxdesigner symbols in some cases , this renders these parts unusable and un fixable.

I also have issue  “-“ in symbol name being changed as it renders parts of my dxdatabook and parts of existing schematics invalid.

This was never an issue before as it appears to be invalid ONLY in CAE decal names used in pads logic, but is valid every place else.

I see that if the migration was with a PADS only design, it would work fine, But it really does not work too well with a DXdesigner/PADS based design.

The sheet border is simply a symbol and changes to it need to happen in the symbol editor.

Which sheet border symbol are you using? My b-size seems to have 5x3.25 squares.

Are you talking about the settings in Setup > Settings > Borders and Zones or the physical look of the sheet border?

TechNote mg529885 details getting a custom border created and the settings to get it included on a new sheet.  If that doesn't fix or explain what you need I would suggest opening an SR with Customer Support.

Clear all locks in Capital

How do I clear all locks for a user in Capital, similar to the “Clear Locks” button that is available in VeSys 2.0?

Expedition Autorouter - don't want via in pad

I foolishly auto-routed without realizing that the autorouter would put a via in a surface mount pad.  Two questions:

1.  How can I clean up my design to undo the via in pads that autoroute put down.  I don't want to lose everything that the autorouter did though.

2.  When using autorouter in the future, how do i specify to it not to put a via in a pad.

This is done within Capital User as you have correctly identified based upon your picture.

I would draw your attention to TechNote MG590916 in SupportNet.

Before performing the following, make sure the User you select is NOT working on the data in question.

To be safest, the User you select to remove Locks from should have Capital tools closed.

If you Delete a Lock that is actually in use, you may cause problems to the data.

Under User Accounts - select the user in question - RMB - Lock Status.

From within the dialog, select one lock at a time and press Delete button.

You can only select one at a time. This is designed to prevent users from unintentionally deleting the wrong Locks.

4K monitors and PADS tools

I'm going to be purchasing a new 27" monitor to replace a 24" monitor that has died. I currently have a 2560 X 1440 27" monitor, and am wondering if anyone has experience using PADS on a 4K, 3840 X 2160 monitor.

Thanks!

I'm not trying to edit a pcb file or a project file.

I don't know how I could have asked my questions any more precisely, but I'll try again

Let's assume I want to use the tutorial as a starting place for another project.

I used File/Save Copy from the menu and called it "experiment".

(This action is performed by the Job Management Wizard)

When I load the NEW design I still see "systemdesign" in the Navigator

RenameBoard.gif

In the picture attached you can see that I have renamed the SCH to "experiment"

and I'm about to rename the BOARD to "experiment"

but if I do I will get warnings and maybe "break the links" errors (your words)

Nothing I've done to cause the warnings/errors has anything to do with a text editor

Just wondering if I'm doing something wrong...

Maybe the question I should have asked is:

"How do I copy a design to a new design, and have the new design have NEW NAMES in the Navigator instead of the old ones?"

(or does every project in the Mentor universe have a "systemdesign" directory tree in it? ...smile)

Re: Fractured schematic part

Hello Mr. Davies,

When I created the fractured symbol through the wizard, I name of the fractured symbol were not name the same. For example AD1054 would be the main one and the first fractured would be AD1054-pwr, AD1054-addr and so on. On my access database only the first AD1054 is assigned the field symbol. when I opened up DxDesigner to view the part in the DxDataBook, only the first symbol shows up.

So you will need to add the other two symbols in the access database as in my picture for the processor.

Firstly you asked how to fix the broken links, assuming there are any, editing the files is the last resort. To avoid broken links do the renames in two steps:

You should do it in these steps:

Rename the board and Forward Annotate to Expedition, exit Expedition and save. Now rename the schematic to Experiment - then forward annotate to PCB - once more - you will get the warning about missing root schematic - FA will fix this.

Should I copy and paste the part on the access database and rename the symbol for each fractured symbol?

I did add the other symbol to the access the database and now show the fractured symbol. However when I placed all the fractured part to the schematic and run the verify tools on the DxDataBook it gave me an error of component not found.

Hello Wim,

Off the top of my head, I am not aware of a way to customize the Layer Stackup print; I think it's a pretty 'canned' output, but we'd have to research this a little to conrfirm.  You'd need a current Support contract to do this, but I can only suggest submitting a Service Request so that one of us can research and confirm whether we can offer any suggestions here or whether it would need to be proposed as an enhancement request on the Mentor Ideas site.

I'm sorry not to be able to offer a more helpful answer straight off.

Kind regards,

John

There are two use models for Hetero's and DxDataBook, TechNote mg26021 details both. We recommend Method 1 where each fracture has a line in the database to avoid the Verify errors

Is there a way to export the Component Library to an excel or text file?

Our company is implementing a new parts tracking system and as such we need to load our part library into it.  Is there a way to export our components library into an excel or text file?  I know we can dump it to XML but would have to write a tool to pull out the information we want.

Hi,

Deletion of this menu is possible.

    Dim cmpPop, ctl, ctl2

    On Error Resume Next

    Set cmpPop = Application.CommandBars("Component Popup")

    For Each ctl In cmpPop.Controls

        If ctl.Caption = "Symbol" Then

            For Each ctl2 In ctl.Controls

                If ctl2.Caption = "&Replace Symbol..." Then

                    ctl2.Delete

                End If

            Next

        End If

    Next
